Kenya travel insurance: now live in the eTA

Update for travel partners · 9 October 2026

Kenya’s travel health insurance is now integrated into new eTA applications. Since 6 October 2026, travellers completing a new application must purchase the Kenyan insurance policy before proceeding to eTA payment.

The policy can also be purchased separately through the eCitizen insurance application portal. This update summarises the changes and practical steps to help travel partners prepare their clients.

What travel partners need to know

New eTA applications: The insurance purchase is part of the application process for entry by air, land or water. EAC citizens are exempt.

Clients who already hold an eTA: There is no need to reapply. Insurance can be purchased separately through the eCitizen insurance application portal.

Cost for planning: Live purchase tests indicate a USD 44 premium, with payment and transaction fees bringing the total to approximately USD 52 per traveller. An official tariff has not yet been published, so use this figure for planning rather than as a confirmed quotation.

Existing travel insurance: Cover purchased elsewhere cannot currently be uploaded. The Kenyan policy sits alongside the traveller’s own travel insurance and does not replace it.

Apply for insurance through eCitizen

To apply for the Kenyan travel insurance policy separately, use the following link to the eCitizen insurance application portal:

Preparing your clients

  • Allow a little extra time for applications while the system settles in.
  • Purchase cover before travel through the official Kenya eTA portal or the eCitizen insurance application portal.
  • Ask clients to save their policy document and eTA confirmation separately and keep both accessible offline during their journey.
  • Recommend that clients retain comprehensive travel insurance appropriate to their full itinerary, medical circumstances and cancellation needs.

About the cover

The policy is underwritten by Britam Insurance and administered by Minet Kenya, with 24-hour assistance.

Benefits and limits

The stated total benefit limit is USD 50,000 per person, comprising:

  • Medical expenses: USD 20,000
  • Emergency medical transport and evacuation: USD 25,000
  • Repatriation of remains: USD 5,000

Benefits are subject to the policy terms and individual limits. Pre-existing and chronic conditions are covered in an emergency only. The policy does not provide the full range of protection normally included in comprehensive travel insurance.

Policy documents and assistance

Travellers receive a Britam policy document, a Minet welcome pack and an insurance reference number. The eTA itself does not mention the insurance, so clients should retain both their eTA and insurance documents.
